A neon tube is a long, cylindrical piece of glass tubing used in the production of neon signs. The hollow tubes are sold by sign suppliers to neon shops around the world, where workers skilled in the craft of bending glass tubing into shapes known as neon benders work in small workshops.

The process of bending a glass tube into a neon sign is a specialized skill that requires a lot of practice and precision. A tube bender heats a section of the glass until it becomes malleable, and then carefully manipulates that portion into a desired shape. He may then align the shape to a pattern paper that contains the graphics or lettering to which the neon sign will conform.

A Los Angeles neon sign is a piece of signage that uses a neon gas to create a glowing effect. Originally invented in 1902 by French engineer Georges Claude, this method of lighting combines electricity and a gas to light up the sign’s shape or design.

Initially, neon was only available in red and orange tones, but other colors were introduced later, most notably blue and yellow. Argon, a mercury-doped gas and phosphorescent coatings were also used to create dazzling colors on signs.

Today, a number of companies manufacture LED signs that can look like a neon sign. These can be more energy-efficient, durable, and dimmable than traditional neon signs.

Neon lights are traditionally created with hand-crafted glass tubes that can be extremely fragile, and need to be protected from external damage. To make these tubes, the glass is shaped and heated to form the desired shapes or lettering. Once the desired shape is achieved, a gas is sealed in a tube, and high voltage electricity is passed through the tube to clean it.

The process of making neon signs is a very tricky one and requires many hours of labor. The narrow glass tubes have to be carefully shaped with a torch flame, and the existing air has to be evacuated before the gas is added.

Though there aren’t too many neon signs left in Los Angeles, those that do remain are a part of our city’s heritage and are worth seeing. Thankfully, there are organizations dedicated to keeping these classic pieces of Americana alive.
